This expertise is indicative of your character's skill at piloting, maneuvering, managing systems for and engaging in combat in or on vehicles.
When you take a point in Pilot expertise, choose a specialization between Planetary Vehicles and Starships. Any character with Piloting expertise will be considered better in general at vehicular piloting than someone without it, but your choice of specialization determines where your particular focus lies and where you gain the most benefit. If you so choose, you may spend a Feat slot when one is available to take the other specialization in addition to your initial choice.
No Points: You can still pilot and operate vehicles of most any type, but you're not likely to wow anyone most days. You'd have stiff competition in an amateur racing league, and combat engagements of any degree are a dangerous prospect. You probably can't get much extra performance out of your vehicle without outside assistance or modifications. Dangerous environments are a great hazard to you.
1 Point: You've picked up some tricks and have developed a level of comfort with the controls and interfaces of the vehicles you frequent. You're familiar with the general systems and mechanics of your vehicles (even if you may not be equipped to repair them), and know how to operate them better than the average user. You can compete well in professional league races and confidently navigate mildly dangerous areas or obstacles like narrow streets and alleys or static debris fields.
2 Points: You're quite skilled, enough to challenge veteran pilots. You know your instruments well enough that you may not even need to check them sometimes to tell when something is off, and you can pull off impressive stunts with your skills. Others might call you an ace pilot at this level, and with how much smooth precision you have, it's hard to dispute them.
3 Points: If they didn't call you an Ace before, they definitely do now, and they're right. Driving or flying is like walking for you, you know the controls like the back of your hand. The vehicle you pilot is like an extension of yourself. You know its capabilities and its limits, and how to push them to the brink.
3☆ (Mastery): Watching you in the pilot's seat is like watching an artist at work, a composer of an orchestra for whom the barest flutter of a hand can bring forth a bombastic crescendo. Every movement is second-nature. You can make maneuvers that would have anyone's eyes watering, achieving feats that others might not have thought possible. Your vehicle might not be faster than someone else's, but you can still get through a course faster because you know every trick in the book and several that were left out of it for squeezing every drop out of a vehicle's systems and exactly how to maneuver it with maximum efficiency.
