This expertise represents your character's technical skill and know-how with generalized Engineering related to mechanical, electrical, and computerized systems. Through this expertise you can apply your character's abilities broadly to a variety of projects and applications, but to do anything particularly noteworthy in any one field you will need to specialize through a feat. When you take this expertise you may choose a specialization for free, and take other specializations when feat slots are available to do so.
What can Engineering do?
What can Engineering not do?
No Points: You're competent when it comes to working with machines. Nobody would say you're incompetent, but you're not the first person to come to mind when someone wants a ship fixed or a speeder in working order. You could clock in, work an eight hour day, and be totally unremarkable and never fired or promoted from your position with this level of skill.
1 Point: You've learned the great many intricacies of working on machinery. You can reliably conduct repairs and basic improvements on complex structures. The more advanced concepts like complex propulsion systems, cutting edge shields, and combat lasers are workable to you with sweat, focus, resources and time - better suited for others to take the lead on, but you can make it work if needed and are an excellent assistant in such cases.
2 Points: You've proven a competency with the advanced concepts of the operations necessary to perform maintenance and improvements to mechanical devices. Complex shield, ionic weaponry, proton torpedoes and hyperdrives are things in your usual rotation of maintenance operations or your design documents. You're able to work on these things with the right tools with standard effort, and able to push the limits of machines when you have access to the right resources.
3 Points: You're a master of all that is metal and sparks. You're one of the top in your field, able to pump out top-of-the-line technology and maintain even the most complex systems. You can smack a malfunctioning Hyperdrive the right way and get it online at the right moment, and your fingers can take even sparse parts sprawled out across a junkyard and turn them into impressive vehicles.
3☆ (Mastery): You have the Knack. When you put your ear to a piece of machinery you can hear it sing to you in a way only you can describe. When you lay your eyes on a machine, you can read off the specs from the back of your head just from a cursory examination. If your hands get inside the workings, it comes away with a sharp rise in efficiency, and your designs and modifications are far and above straining the limits of what might consider 'technology' and bordering on 'wizardry'.
